Region of origin: Japan

This invisible yokai gets up to mischief by standing in alleys and roadways at night acting as a wall to block the progress of those traveling or drunks trying to stagger their way home. They can stretch infinitely across but tapping the ground by their base can cause them to scatter and clear the path. There is some thought the nurikabe is not its own being but just one of the forms a tanuki or similar transforming creature may take to get its pranks off. Though invisble, classic depictions show the nurikabe as a large animal-like mass of flesh, while modern ones are more often a simple white or grey monolith with tiny facial features.
