Mishipeshu

Region of origin: Great Lakes and northeastern North America

A giant aquatic fish-cat said to live on an island in Lake Superior, the Mishipeshu was a violent, evil creature who lorded over all water-dwelling beasts and lived in opposition to the Thunderbird, who ruled the skies. It was said to guard hoards of copper and protected its home by being able to summon great storms. It was either viewed as a singular water deity or a whole species living in a close-knit community, depending on the telling.
