Peuchen

Region of origin: Southern Chile

A shape-shifting creature of Mapuche and Chilote folklore, the peuchen’s true or at least commonly-taken form was said to be a winged serpent, making a whistling noise as it glided through the air. Its gaze could paralyze its victims, often sheep or other livestock, allowing it to suck their blood at its leisure. There is some thought that, diverging over time and passed through other cultures, the peuchen myth may have provided some foundational origins for modern-day chupacabra lore.
