Yukinko

Region of origin: Japan

The “snow child” is a yokai who takes the form of a small male child lost in a snowstorm, wearing a yuki mino, a traditional winter covering made from straw. They will often work in conjunction with the yuki-onna, the snow woman, to get travelers lost in inclement weather and freeze to death. There are more magnanimous tales, however, of they or the similar yokai yuki warashi acting as a surrogate son to childless couples in the winter months, returning annually.
